Kevin Farnen first took office January 1, 1977 and has been re-elected for five additional terms.

A General Description of the duties of the coroner are as follows:

When any person in any county in a coroner is required by Sec. 58.010 of the State Statutes, dies and there is reasonable ground to believe that such person died as a result of:

  1. Violence by homicide, suicide, or accident.
  2. Criminal abortions, including those self-induced.
  3. Some unforeseen sudden occurrence and the deceased had not been attended by a physician during the thirty-six hour period preceding the death.
  4. In any unusual or suspicious manner.
  5. Any injury or illness while in the custody of the law or while an inmate in a public institution.

Other duties include but not limited too:

  • Child’s death under the age of eighteen are referred to a child fatality review panel.
  • The Coroner may hold an inquest to have a jury determine the cause of death when in the opinion of the coroner that it would be in the public interest to do so.
  • To perform duties of sheriff when office is vacant.
